La Vache Enragée — Book Plate XXIV Lithographic Print (1950)
This lithographic reproduction presents Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s 1896 design created to promote the short-lived illustrated journal La Vache Enragée, founded by Adolphe Willette. Executed in four colors, the composition captures Lautrec’s characteristic blend of humor and movement, with a sharply angled street scene animated by a fleeing figure and a pursuing bull, rendered in expressive line and flat areas of color.
The image reflects Lautrec’s mature lithographic style, developed during the 1890s when he elevated the poster medium through innovative use of contour, asymmetry, and psychological immediacy. Rather than relying on elaborate backgrounds, he reduced forms to their essentials, allowing gesture and composition to carry narrative and tone.
This example corresponds to the second state of the design, incorporating the full lettering associated with its use as a promotional placard. The original poster was exhibited at the Exposition d’Affiches Artistiques at the Cirque de Reims in March 1896 and later reproduced in reduced format for exhibition catalogues in the early 20th century.
Printed in 1950 in a limited edition, reportedly of 300 impressions with a portion lost to fire, this reproduction reflects the postwar revival of Lautrec’s graphic work. It is presented on archival, acid-free linen backing and remains in excellent condition.
