Michael Cycling Scene Book Plate XXIV Lithographic Print by Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (1950)

This 1950 lithographic bookplate XXIV of Henri Toulouse-Lautrec’s “Michael” captures a rare sporting subject in the artist’s oeuvre, centered on the celebrated English cyclist known as Michael. Executed in Lautrec’s characteristic economy of line, the composition presents a vivid moment at the Buffalo cycle track in Neuilly, with the rider in motion while two figures—sporting correspondent Frantz Reichel and coach Choppy Warburton—observe from the sidelines.

Printed in a restrained dark green palette, the work demonstrates Lautrec’s ability to convey movement and personality through minimal means. Originally conceived as a poster in 1896 but never issued as such, the image survives in later editions such as this 1950 printing, preserving a lesser-known facet of his output beyond the cabaret and theatrical worlds.

Archival linen-backed and in excellent condition, this piece reflects the enduring clarity and graphic sophistication of Lautrec’s lithographic practice.
