Description
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec – Elles (La Plume), 1951 Mourlot Lithograph
This color lithograph after Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s Elles (1896) was printed in Paris by Mourlot Frères in 1951. The composition, originally created as the frontispiece for Lautrec’s celebrated Elles album, was adapted here with overprinted exhibition text for La Plume, referencing the 1896 presentation of the series.
Rendered in a restrained palette of green, blue, red, and orange, the image depicts a woman seen from behind arranging her hair—an intimate, observational motif characteristic of the Elles suite. The presence of the top hat at left introduces an ambiguous narrative element, often interpreted as a subtle reference to the social context of the sitter. As with the original series, the work reflects Lautrec’s exploration of private female spaces, marked by a balance of immediacy, restraint, and psychological nuance.
Printed more than half a century after the original 1896 edition, this Mourlot lithograph represents a carefully produced posthumous impression after Lautrec’s design. Mourlot’s atelier played a central role in preserving and disseminating the work of major modern artists through high-quality lithographic editions.
