Original “The Evergreen Playground” Puget Sound pictorial map poster created by the Kroll Map Company of Seattle. This detailed vintage lithograph presents a bird’s‑eye view of Washington State’s Puget Sound region, including the San Juan Islands, the Cascade Mountains, and the Olympic Mountains.
Master cartographer Ed Poland, who worked for many years as chief cartographer at Kroll Map Company, originally drew this map during the Great Depression. His work combines precise geographic detail with imaginative artistic elements, creating a unique and visually engaging map.
The composition features extensive place‑name detail, highways, railroads, and water routes, along with charming pictorial elements such as mermaids and decorative illustrations. A richly illustrated border surrounds the map with small scenes representing Washington State industries and outdoor life, including logging, shipping, rail transportation, skiing, fishing, hunting, and water sports. The four corners include Native American–inspired graphics, while the side panels feature tall fir and pine trees, emphasizing the region’s natural beauty.
The presence of a B‑29 aircraft, introduced in 1944, helps date this charming mid‑century map illustration.
This poster has been professionally archival linen backed and is in fine A‑ condition, with only one small repair in the outer white border and no tears or stains.
