This authenticated offset lithograph is a masterpiece of art deco commercial design, combining elegant modernist imagery with the competitive spirit of Italy’s golden age of hat manufacturing.
The composition is visually arresting: a sleek, stylized white West Highland Terrier in profile discovers a Barbisio fedora during its daily wanderings. The dog is rendered in bold, geometric art deco forms—minimalist yet expressive, conveying sophistication and refined taste through pure line and form. The bright red background creates luminous contrast, drawing the eye to both the dog and the iconic hat positioned below.
But beneath the adorable imagery lies serious commerce. The company’s slogan reads: “One Name – One Marque – One Guarantee”—a declaration of quality, consistency, and trust that positions Barbisio not merely as a hat maker, but as an institution of reliability in an industry built on craftsmanship.
Barbisio was the largest competitor to Italy’s most famous hat brand, Borsalino. Based near Sagliano Micca, a small village about 20 minutes north of Biella—the world’s capital of fine woolen textile production—Barbisio supplied the most luxurious woven cloth and finished fedoras to discerning customers across Europe and beyond. The company’s commitment to excellence rivaled that of its more famous competitor.
Mingozzi Studio was a Bolognese graphic design powerhouse of immense historical importance. In addition to creating numerous highly original posters (documented in PAI XLII, 379), the studio founded ATLA, an advertising agency that produced a remarkable body of poster work throughout the 1920s and 1930s. This Barbisio commission showcases the studio’s mature mastery of art deco form and commercial persuasion.
