Launched in 1935, the SS Normandie quickly became the most powerful and technologically advanced passenger ship afloat. Built in Saint‑Nazaire for the French Line (Compagnie Générale Transatlantique), she dazzled travelers with revolutionary design and opulent interiors that many historians still consider the pinnacle of ocean liner luxury.
During her career, Normandie completed 139 transatlantic crossings between Le Havre and New York and repeatedly captured the prestigious Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossing, famously competing with her great rival, the RMS Queen Mary.
Her story took a dramatic turn during World War II, when U.S. authorities seized the ship in New York and renamed her USS Lafayette. While being converted into a troopship in 1942, a catastrophic fire caused the vessel to capsize at Pier 88 on the Hudson River. Although later salvaged, restoration proved too costly, and the ship was ultimately scrapped in 1946, cementing her legacy as one of the most legendary liners ever built.
