Description

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec “Sescau Photographe” Book Plate XXIV Lithographic Print

This four-color lithographic reproduction, printed in 1950, is based on Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s 1894 design created for the photographer Sescau, a friend of the artist. The composition reflects Lautrec’s playful and inventive approach, combining bold typography with stylized, almost surreal figures.

Dominating the left side is a striking red-haired female figure rendered with flowing, decorative line and exaggerated movement, while to the right a small performer-like figure appears elevated on stilts, adding a theatrical and slightly absurd note. The flat green background enhances the visual contrast, allowing the figures and lettering to stand out with clarity and immediacy.

Originally conceived as a personal and artistic gesture rather than a conventional commercial advertisement, the work demonstrates Lautrec’s ability to merge caricature, humor, and design into a cohesive visual statement. Subtle details, including symbolic motifs and variations found in different proofs, further underscore the experimental nature of the composition.

Professionally linen backed and ready for presentation, this piece represents a distinctive example of Lautrec’s graphic innovation and his close ties to the creative circles of Montmartre.
