This c. 1900 William Bradley lithograph for Ault & Wiborg marks a decisive shift toward architectural formality in his approach to printing ink advertising. Rather than the flowing figural compositions of his earlier work, Bradley here embraces pure ornamental geometry—a heavy, symmetrical frame enclosing a cartouche of red type against dark ground. The suspended bells and formal urns flanking the central reserve signal Bradley’s movement toward Art Deco vocabulary, presaging the modernist sensibilities that would define early-twentieth-century design.
The composition demonstrates how ink companies weaponized artistic quality to legitimize industrial products.
