Description

This extraordinary original Victor Prouvé L’Image lithograph (1897) represents one of the finest surviving examples of École de Nancy aesthetics and French Art Nouveau graphic design at its zenith. Victor Prouvé (1858–1943), painter, sculptor, and master engraver, stands among the most celebrated figures of the movement—a visionary whose work directly influenced the decorative arts revolution that transformed European design in the late 19th century.

This lithograph was created as a cover design for L’Image, the prestigious monthly literary and artistic review that featured the most innovative artists of the Belle Époque era. The 1897 edition was exceptionally limited: only 100 impressions on vellum paper and 10 copies on fine Japanese imperial paper.  This is printed on the vellum paper, but still makes it one of the scarcest and most sought-after Art Nouveau prints in existence. The complete set of 12 covers from this campaign, executed by the masters of the day, remains virtually unavailable to collectors; this set represents part of the collection currently on the market.

Prouvé’s design exemplifies the hallmarks of École de Nancy: fluid, organic line work; classical figuration rendered with sinuous grace; ornamental borders drawing inspiration from natural forms; and a sophisticated integration of typography and image. The composition—a languid female figure in flowing drapery, adorned with decorative detail—embodies the movement’s celebration of feminine beauty, natural curves, and refined aesthetics. The inscription “Orné de Figures sur Bois” (decorated with faces on wood) references the engraving tradition that informed Art Nouveau’s visual language.

Prouvé’s contributions extended far beyond printmaking. He designed revolutionary glass works and furniture for Émile Gallé, collaborated with Eugène Vallin and the Daum Brothers, and shaped the decorative vision of Nancy’s artistic renaissance. His work is held in major institutions, including the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam—a testament to his significance in art history.

This original lithograph arrives professionally conservation-mounted on acid-free archival museum mat (20″ x 16″), linen-backed, and in excellent condition. It represents a museum-quality acquisition for serious collectors of Art Nouveau, French graphic design, and rare literary ephemera. Certificate of Authenticity included.
