Original WWI James Montgomery Flagg Poster — “Tell That to the Marines!” (1918) — Rare Vintage Patriotic Artwork. Archival linen backing and ready to frame. The poster edge was trimmed to 38.5 x 27.5 inches. Without the trim, the poster would grade as excellent, grade A, but due to the trimming, it is listed as B+.
This is a rare and original World War I propaganda poster created by renowned American artist James Montgomery Flagg, famous for the iconic “I Want YOU for U.S. Army” Uncle Sam poster. This striking piece showcases his lively hand-drawn style and strong message:
“TELL THAT TO THE MARINES!” (in bold red headline at the top).
The powerful image shows a determined man—stern-faced, jaw clenched, coat thrown over his shoulders—standing on the steps of the N. Y. Public Library to raise money for war bonds. Filled with patriotic resolve. At his feet lies a crumpled newspaper with the sensational headline: “Huns Kill Women and Children!” (referring to atrocities of the German military and boosting the poster’s emotional impact). His stance displays readiness to act, possibly just before enlisting in the Marine Corps.
James Montgomery Flagg’s face is recognizable worldwide. His self-portrait of Uncle Sam creates an iconic image for the United States. This artist’s posters will always be some of the most collectible and significant posters in American history!
Flagg’s signature is at the lower left. The sparse background highlights the central figure; the only other detail, the ground beneath him, is simply rendered with shadows and pale strokes, implying wherever American citizens might be moved to action—an anonymous space made urgent by news.
