May Belfort Book Plate XXIV Lithographic Print by Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (1950)
This 1950 lithographic reproduction of Henri Toulouse-Lautrec’s “May Belfort,” originally created in 1895, captures the distinctive presence of the English singer known for her performances at Parisian café-concert venues. The composition presents Belfort in a striking frontal pose, her elongated red dress contrasted with a dark shawl and softly indicated background lines.
Lautrec’s use of simplified form and expressive contour emphasizes character over detail, reflecting his ability to distill personality through minimal means. The bold color contrast and flattened perspective align with his pioneering approach to poster design during the height of the Art Nouveau period.
May Belfort was a recurring subject in Lautrec’s work, often depicted with her signature repertoire and stage persona. This composition, originally exhibited in major poster exhibitions of the late nineteenth century, remains a refined example of his engagement with performers of the Parisian nightlife scene.
Archival linen backed and in excellent condition, this piece preserves the clarity and graphic strength of Lautrec’s original design.
