Description

La Revue Blanche — Original Lithographic Poster (c.1895, Sponsel Edition)

This lithographic poster reproduces Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s celebrated 1895 design for La Revue Blanche, one of the defining images of his mature poster work. The composition features Misia Natanson, central figure of the Parisian avant-garde and wife of the magazine’s editor Thadée Natanson, rendered with characteristic economy of line and restrained color.

Lautrec reduces the scene to essential forms: a sweeping silhouette, soft tonal contrasts, and sparse environmental cues that suggest a winter setting. The figure’s voluminous fur stole and poised stance convey both elegance and detachment, while the surrounding space remains deliberately understated. As noted in contemporary scholarship, the image subtly evokes the setting of the Palais de Glace without explicitly depicting skates, reflecting Lautrec’s interest in suggestion over description.

This example is identified as a Sponsel edition, a later authorized printing after the original design. While not a first-state period impression from the 1890s, such editions were produced with attention to the original lithographic character and remain part of the broader collecting field of Lautrec’s graphic work.

Presented in a 16 x 20-inch acid-free archival folder, suitable for display and preservation. Condition is excellent. As with all later editions, attribution is based on provided publication details rather than visible printer’s marks in the image.
