This poignant original lithograph, created in 1915 by the renowned French artist Lucien Jonas, serves as a masterful example of World War I commemorative art. Titled “La Journée du Poilu,” the poster was commissioned to honor and raise funds for the French infantrymen—famously nicknamed “Poilus”—during the Christmas season of 1915.
The artwork captures a rare, quiet moment of humanity amid the devastation of the Great War. Two soldiers are shown in a makeshift shelter, momentarily distracted from the rigors of the front lines as they unpack a “colis” (care package) from home. The warm, painterly style underscores the emotional bond between the civilian home front and the soldiers in the trenches.
The term “Poilu” (literally meaning “hairy one”) is the informal yet deeply affectionate term for the French World War I infantryman. It suggests a rustic, brave soldier too busy fighting in the trenches to shave.
These soldiers were the backbone of the French defense. In this image, they are shown wearing the iconic “Horizon Blue” uniforms and Adrian helmets, introduced in 1915 to replace the outdated and highly visible red trousers (pantalon garance) used at the start of the war. This poster is an archival linen-backed original from 1915, in excellent condition, especially given that it is over 110 years old. The earliest French posters were printed on cotton-based paper, which has allowed them to survive in good condition over the years. Grade A-.
