Description
Original WW1 US propaganda poster designed by Charles Livingston Bull (1874-1932) and entitled “Keep Him Free Buy War Savings Stamps”. This poster was issued to promote the US Treasury Department’s purchase of War Savings Stamps. This poster has been linen-backed. This poster features a bald eagle perched on the edge of his nest, surrounded by numerous WWI biplanes. This is an excellent poster for the WWI collector or any aviation enthusiast. Both the eagle and the planes are drawn with magnificent detail. One of World War One’s most impressive posters! A- condition, ready to frame.
Using inventive campaigning, the government brought in more than a billion dollars through the sale of Thrift and War Savings Stamps” (Rawls, pp. 219-222). Here, the symbolic bald eagle watches as her nest of Curtiss Jenny biplanes heads off to Europe to fight the good fight. Excellent vivid colors, no sun damage. Medium dark blue sky. Deep red text at top.
There is a slight edge repair on the bottom, lower left white area of about 1/16” – 1/8”. The top right outside border has about ¼” small fold, and the paper was bent back and laid down during linen backing. Otherwise, with these minor imperfections, this poster would be listed as excellent to mint. Great colors. These images are of the exact poster you will receive. This is an Original World War 1 vintage poster: Food Will Win the War. Archival linen-backed. PRINTER: Rusling Wood Litho., New York Bright and in good condition. There is some marks down the left side of the poster, possible ink from when the poster was printed.
This poster calls on immigrants to do their part in the war effort. It depicts recent immigrants standing near a sailing ship with the Statue of Liberty and a rainbow stretched across the New York City skyline in the background. The text reads:
You came here seeking Freedom.
You must now help preserve it.
Wheat is needed by the Allies.
Waste nothing.
The generosity and compassion of the American people and the great agricultural resources of the North American continent would be called upon… Twenty million Americans signed pledges of membership in the Food Administration, which obligated them to conserve scarce food so that our Allies in Europe would not have to go hungry. In addition to meat and eggs, Americans were urged to cut back on wheat, the single most vital food item… Meatless and wheatless days each week were patriotically subscribed to by America’s families (Rawls, p. 112-115).
