Haddon Hall premiered at the Savoy Theatre on September 24, 1892, for an impressive 204-performance run. Composer Arthur Sullivan and librettist Sydney Grundy created this beloved light opera, which audiences—particularly amateur theatre groups throughout Britain—championed well into the 1920s.
The opera dramatizes Dorothy Vernon’s 1563 elopement with John Manners (son of the 1st Earl of Rutland). Grundy relocated the story to approximately 1660, weaving in the Royalist vs. Roundhead conflict as a dramatic backdrop. This legendary tale captures the romance and intrigue of English theatrical tradition.
