Description

The Des Sucs de Raisins Frais cartone, produced circa 1900, advertises “The Success of French Grapes”—a French non-alcoholic beverage that positioned fresh-pressed grape juice as a sophisticated alternative to fermented wines. This is one of the most visually complex and narratively rich examples of Art Nouveau grape juice poster design ever created.  Yet the poster’s artistic ambition transcends product promotion, functioning instead as a detailed visual encyclopedia of French viticulture, regional pride, and the decorative philosophy that defined the Belle Époque.

The composition demonstrates masterful chromolithograph technique. A dark-haired maiden in classical pose dominates the left side, vines spiraling through her locks, holding a cluster of grapes aloft in one hand and a champagne-style glass of juice in the other—a visual assertion that this beverage embodies the prestige of wine without alcohol’s risks. Above her unfolds a panoramic landscape: vineyards stretching toward a medieval town labeled “Établissement Français du Succès des Raisins” (French Establishment of the Success of Grapes). Grape harvesters work among vines; a river winds through terraced slopes. The landscape itself becomes architectural: the vineyard plateau transforms into the roof of a distillery, where three giant casks release waterfalls of colored juice—brilliant yellows, reds, and oranges cascading downward.

Beneath this spectacle, seven cherubs float among soft clouds, raising goblets to celebrate the French grape juice varieties offered. Regional pricing is meticulously inscribed: Touraine wines at 1.50 francs, Burgundy at 2.00, and prestigious Grand Crû selections at 2.50. This Touraine Burgundy wine region poster thus embeds French terroir hierarchy and economic detail into an ornamental narrative.

The gold-rimmed cartone adds museum-quality presentation; the protective varnish (historically applied to prevent insect damage to paper products) has mellowed to a gentle patina that reflects light, enhancing the already sophisticated color palette of soft, harmonious hues.

Condition: A (excellent). Display-ready. IVPDA-certified. Includes Certificate of Authenticity. A landmark Art Nouveau beverage poster combining artistic mastery with commercial history.
