Description
Leonetto Cappiello’s Miroir du Monde (1936) is a tour de force of Art Deco commercial design—bold, irreverent, and unforgettable. This original lithograph announces that “Advertising is the real goddess of commerce,” and Cappiello embodies that principle with stunning visual wit. A red-faced woman with golden horn-like hair dominates the composition, escorted by Mercury himself in his winged petasos and caduceus, declaring to the world that advertising—not wealth, not power—drives modern commerce.
Cappiello (1875–1942) revolutionized poster design by infusing commercial art with theatrical flair and psychological insight. Unlike his contemporaries, he understood that a poster must provoke emotion first, convey information second. His figures are exaggerated, expressive, almost grotesque in their vitality—they leap off the wall and demand attention. He believed advertising should be bold enough to make people stop mid-stride. Every Cappiello poster is a performance, and Miroir du Monde is no exception.
This 10 3/8″ x 14 5/8″ piece showcases his mastery of color harmony: the striking red face pops against deep black, while gold and white accents create rhythm and visual movement. The small format was created only in this single edition for Miroir du Monde, making it a rare variant in the Cappiello canon. Currently in Grade A condition, it has been professionally conservation-mounted, linen-backed, and presented in an archival museum mat (16 x 20) for elegant display. The lithographic colors remain vibrant and true. Every poster includes a Free Certificate of Authenticity in your shipment.
A museum-quality example of Art Deco’s golden age and Cappiello’s genius for persuasion through provocation. Inventory #13077.
