Description

A remarkable find for serious poster collectors, this original Bière de Charmes poster is a scarce small cartone-format advertisement from the Belle Époque. This particular Biere de Charmes vintage poster exemplifies turn-of-the-century French beer advertising at its most whimsical and decorative.

This is the only known small cartone format of this Bière de Charmes poster in circulation. Most surviving examples of this beer advertisement exist in larger formats, making this compact version exceptionally rare and highly sought by collectors of vintage French beverages and Art Nouveau advertising.

The design features a playful cherub figure floating above a pyramid of beer barrels labeled “BRUNE,” “PILSEN,” and “MARS”—the brewery’s signature beer varieties. The composition exemplifies the period’s approach to beer marketing: sophisticated yet lighthearted, combining classical imagery with commercial appeal.

Condition: Professionally restored and linen-backed for preservation and display stability. The restoration work ensures this original Bière de Charmes advertisement remains vibrant and structurally sound for years to come.   This poster presents very well, but is in B condition.

Format Significance: The small cartone format was used for specialized retail displays, point-of-sale materials, and personal collections—making surviving examples considerably rarer than full-size poster editions.

Biere de Charmes was a French brewery brand operating during the Belle Époque period (late 1800s–early 1900s). This era marked a golden age of French advertising design, when breweries competed for market share through increasingly creative, eye-catching poster campaigns. The three distinct beers advertised here—Brune (dark lager), Pilsen (pilsner-style), and Mars (likely a premium or specialty ale)—suggest a diversified product line catering to different taste preferences.

French beer advertising posters of this period are now highly collectible, representing the intersection of commercial art, national beverage culture, and fin-de-siècle design sensibilities.
