Presenting an original c. 1885 chromolithograph by the celebrated Boston color-printing pioneer Louis Prang, titled Titmice. This antique natural history print depicts a cheerful group of tits — including the Great Tit and Blue Tit — perched among branches and a sawed-off stump in a lush woodland setting. Issued as a color plate from the natural-history publication Animate Creation by the Rev. J.G. Wood, it is a brilliant example of Prang’s chromolithographic art.
Artist & Significance:
Louis Prang (1823–1909), the “father of the American Christmas card” and America’s foremost color printer of the nineteenth century, dominated color lithography through his Boston firm, Prang & Co. No one before or after matched his consummate skill; his original color prints demanded as many as thirty-five separate printings to achieve the subtleties of tone and color he insisted upon. This authentic Prang chromolithograph showcases his signature fidelity of color and fine detail.

Executed as an original chromolithograph on nineteenth-century wove paper, printed by Prang & Co. and published by Selmar Hess in New York, with full margins. This authentic print is presented in an acid-free, museum-quality 16″ x 20″ archival mat, suitable for framing, and is in excellent condition, retaining its full and vivid color ranges. As with all works of the Prang series depicting eleven portrayals of birds, the color printing is both accurate and superbly rendered.
