A Piece of World’s Fair History
In 1974, something special happened in Spokane, Washington. The city hosted a World’s Fair—and not just any fair. Expo ’74 was the very first World’s Fair dedicated entirely to the environment. From May through November, over 5.6 million people visited to celebrate innovation, nature, and a better future.
This calendar poster is a beautiful snapshot of that moment. It’s practical (you could actually use it to plan your visit), but it’s also gorgeous—a colorful map of the fairgrounds with bold graphic design that captures the excitement and optimism of the 1970s.
Why Spokane? Why This Fair?
Here’s the cool part: Spokane was the smallest city ever to host a World’s Fair. That might not sound like a big deal, but it was. It took vision, hard work, and determination from people like King Cole, an urban planner who convinced Spokane’s leaders that hosting an international exposition would transform the city.
And it worked. The fair brought federal and state funding, inspired urban renewal, and resulted in the creation of Riverfront Park—one of Spokane’s most beloved spaces today. The fair also removed unsightly railroad infrastructure from downtown, opening up the riverfront to the community. Expo ’74 genuinely changed Spokane’s future.
The Environmental Message
This wasn’t just about celebrating what’s possible—it was about celebrating the planet. In 1974, when environmental awareness was just beginning to take hold, Spokane hosted a fair that put nature and sustainability front and center. The poster, with its bright natural colors and optimistic graphic style, perfectly captured that message.
Harder to Find Than You’d Think

These pieces have become genuinely scarce, which makes finding an original in excellent condition—like this one—a real treasure. It’s a working artifact of American optimism, urban renewal, and environmental consciousness all at once.
