Description

This extraordinary Eugene Oge La Menthe Pastille lithograph from circa 1904 is a rare discovery in small format—a size collectors rarely encounter for this iconic design. The poster channels satirical political commentary into a liqueur advertisement with audacious imagery centered on the Tribunal de la Haye (Hague Tribunal).

The context is historically significant. In 1898, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikolai Muraviov, acting on behalf of Tsar Nicholas II, proposed an international peace conference to end the arms race threatening the world. The Hague Tribunal emerged from this diplomatic initiative. Oge seized upon this moment, embedding the tribunal’s symbolic weight into his advertisement—transforming a mint liqueur into a statement about global cooperation.

The composition is deliberately provocative and culturally layered. Uncle Sam appears holding a glass of La Menthe Pastille, extending it toward a figure rendered in period caricature. This detail is particularly notable: French advertising law strictly prohibited liquor from being touched by the lips in official advertisements. Yet here, Oge crossed that boundary—perhaps because it was American Uncle Sam, not a French citizen, wielding the glass. The visual tension becomes part of the poster’s audacious charm.

La Menthe Pastille itself carries a distinguished heritage. The mint-flavored liqueur was first produced in 1885 by pharmacist Émile Giffard at his renowned Giffard Distilleries in Angers, Loire Valley, France. The formula persists today, making this poster a window into a product with genuine staying power. Oge’s design elevated the brand into the realm of cultural commentary.

Eugene Oge (1861–1936) was a master of visual layering—combining commercial purpose with artistic ambition and historical awareness. La Menthe Pastille showcases his genius for blending satire, elegance, and narrative depth. The multicolored figures against the dark background create visual drama while the typography anchors the liqueur’s identity.

This small-format version is exceptionally rare. The design was typically produced in large oversize dimensions, making this intimate horizontal format (17.75″ × 11.25″) a significant find for collectors. Conservation-mounted on archival linen and professionally restored at the edges commensurate with its 120-year history, the poster retains excellent color saturation and sharp printing detail throughout. It arrives matted in acid-free protection, ready for immediate framing.

Whether you collect Oge’s work, French advertising satire, Art Nouveau political commentary, or rare small-format posters, this La Menthe Pastille represents an opportunity to own a genuine rarity. Each original poster in our collection includes a Certificate of Authenticity and three decades of expert authentication and curation.
