Description
This exceptional linen-backed lithograph represents a brilliant chapter in Italian poster design and commercial art history. Commissioned by Perugina, one of Italy’s most prestigious chocolate manufacturers, the poster was originally created in 1929 by the renowned Italian artist Frederico Seneca (1891-1976). This is the vibrant second printing from the 1950s, when Perugina’s iconic status in American culture was solidifying—the brand had made its triumphant debut at the 1939 New York World’s Fair.
Seneca’s composition is masterful in its economy of form and psychological impact. The dynamic red and black figure, rendered in pure Art Deco-modernist style, appears to dance or leap across a luminous yellow field, holding aloft the blue chocolate boxes that define the Perugina product. The composition conveys motion, joy, and elegance—precisely the emotional associations Perugina sought to cultivate around its luxury confections. The bold typography of “CIOCCOLATINI” and “PERUGINA” frames the composition with confident, integrated letterforms that speak to the confidence of interwar Italian design.
Founded in 1907 in Perugia, Perugina represents the pinnacle of Italian chocolate craftsmanship, and this poster embodies that heritage. Seneca’s signature appears directly in the plate, confirming authenticity. The piece survives in excellent condition with proper linen backing, preserving the stone lithography’s rich color saturation and tonal depth. This is not a reproduction—original vintage posters were produced in limited quantities for display in retail and theatrical venues, making surviving examples increasingly scarce and sought after by serious collectors.
For collectors of Italian modernist design, food and beverage advertising, or Art Deco aesthetics, this Perugina poster represents a museum-caliber acquisition. Accompanied by our Certificate of Authenticity.
