The powerful visual shows a monumental Navy sailor wading through the churning waters of the Atlantic, heroically carrying a fully equipped American “Doughboy” soldier on his shoulder. Henry Reuterdahl (1870 or 1871–1925) was a Swedish-American painter and maritime illustrator highly recognized for his nautical artwork and his connection with the U.S. Navy. He was chosen by President Theodore Roosevelt to join the Great White Fleet voyage in 1907 to document the trip. He served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve Force during World War I.
