Description

1921 Bains de Mer de la Manche Vintage Travel Poster – Granville France | Georges Meunier

This beautiful original 1922 Bains de Mer de la Manche vintage travel poster by Georges Meunier promotes the seaside resorts along the western coast of France. Printed by the renowned Chaix printing house (Jules Chéret), the poster was created for the Chemins de Fer de l’État railway, encouraging travelers to visit the picturesque beaches of Normandy.

The artwork captures a charming harbor scene in Granville, a historic coastal town overlooking the English Channel. In the foreground, a fishmonger tends to the day’s fresh catch beside a small fishing boat, while nearby, a man in a rowboat unloads fish along the quay. The calm harbor waters reflect the boats and docks, while the hillside town of Granville rises in the background, giving the composition depth and atmosphere.

Granville has long been known as one of the most attractive seaside destinations on the Normandy coast, famous for its maritime traditions, fishing port, and scenic views of the Channel. Travel posters like this were produced by the French railway companies to inspire visitors to journey by train to the “Bains de Mer de la Manche,” or sea bathing resorts, where travelers could enjoy the fresh ocean air, beaches, and vibrant coastal life.

Meunier’s elegant composition and soft color palette beautifully evoke the atmosphere of a working harbor and the appeal of France’s seaside culture during the early 20th century.

This poster has been professionally archival linen‑backed and is in good condition, ready for framing and display. The lower left corner was professionally restored, and a horizontal center fold mark was corrected during linen backing. The colors remain bright and vivid with excellent visual appeal.
