Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec – Floreal (Désiré Dihau) – 1935 H. Lefebvre Edition Lithograph
This lithographic reproduction, published in Paris by H. Lefebvre in 1935, presents Floreal, one of a group of designs created by Toulouse-Lautrec between 1895 and 1896 for the series Mélodies de Désiré Dihau. These works were originally issued as illustrated covers for sheet music associated with the composer and performer Désiré Dihau, a figure within Lautrec’s Montmartre circle.
The composition is rendered in a свобод, linear manner characteristic of Lautrec’s graphic approach to music-related subjects. Figures are suggested through quick, economical strokes: a dancing couple occupies the center, while an accompanying musician anchors the scene. The integration of handwritten-style text and image reflects the functional purpose of the original design while maintaining a distinct artistic identity.
Original impressions formed part of printed musical scores, whereas later editions such as Lefebvre’s 1935 printing were produced independently for collectors. These reproductions preserve the immediacy of Lautrec’s line but differ from period examples in format and production context.
The composition is referenced in standard catalogues, including Delteil and Wittrock.
