Description
This is an exceptional find: an original Paul Mohr Mercurey Kina vintage lithographic poster from 1925, printed by Edia Paris with the artist’s signature in the plate.
Rarity & Provenance
The Paul Mohr Mercurey Kina poster exists in two distinct formats—this smaller 11″ × 16.5″ version and a standard French poster size of 47″ × 31.5″ (117.5 × 80 cm). Very few Paul Mohr posters survived the century, likely due to limited print runs and the fragility of period lithography. The smaller format Mercurey Kina has rarely appeared on the market; this is the first time it has been made available through our gallery. The larger format last sold over 15 years ago, underscoring the scarcity of this artist’s work.
Artist & Style
Paul Gustave Mohr (1890–1959) brought the sophisticated flair of Jean d’Ylen and Adolphe Mouron Cassandre to beverage advertising. His posters combine bold Art Nouveau geometry with dynamic figuration—a hallmark that makes his work highly sought by serious collectors. The Mercurey Kina poster exemplifies his mastery of color and composition, with two elegantly rendered figures framing the product centerpiece against a dramatic dark background.
Subject & Context
Mercurey is a village in the Côte Chalonnaise sub-region of Burgundy, renowned for producing fine red wines from the Pinot Noir grape variety. Kina was a popular aperitif and wine-based spirit marketed across France in the 1920s. This poster captures the elegance and social sophistication associated with the drink during the Belle Époque and Art Deco periods.
Condition & Presentation
Linen-backed in B condition and ready to frame. The poster features a slightly glossy, varnished finish typical of period French lithography, adding depth and visual richness to the artwork.
Authentication & Guarantee
This is an original lithograph, not a reproduction. It comes with our Certificate of Authenticity. As IVPDA-certified vintage poster dealers with 30 years of hands-on experience authenticating original posters, we stand behind every detail of condition and provenance.
