Presenting an original c. 1896 chromolithograph by the celebrated Boston publisher Prang & Co., depicting a magnificent branch of golden apples laden with ripe yellow fruit and green leaves, sweeping from the upper left toward the base of the composition. To the right, a panel with an arched top frames a serene rural landscape — a farmhouse nestled in a dark, mountainous valley beneath a blossoming tree. A decorative border of small apple-like fruits completes the design.
Artist & Significance:
This authentic antique print was issued as a plate from the celebrated natural-history publication Animate Creation by the Rev. J.G. Wood, published by Selmar Hess of New York, with color plates by the legendary Boston firm of Prang & Co. — the “father of the American Christmas card” and America’s foremost color printer of the nineteenth century, whose original chromolithographs demanded up to thirty-five separate printings to achieve their unmatched subtlety of tone and color.
