Original vintage poster: ROMA (Italy) designed by artist Virgilio Retrosi, circa 1930. This striking Italian travel poster is professionally archival linen-backed, with minor restoration to the outer borders. The poster was originally folded, and professional conservation during linen backing restored the fold marks.
Retrosi presents a dramatic architectural composition that highlights several of Rome’s most iconic monuments. The design prominently features the Monument of Victor Emmanuel II (Altare della Patria), the Column of Marcus Aurelius, and the tower of Santa Maria Maggiore. These landmarks create a powerful visual tribute to Rome’s historic skyline.
The Monument of Victor Emmanuel II appears in the background. Construction began in 1895 and concluded in 1911. The monument houses the Altar of the Fatherland, which includes the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, honoring Italian soldiers who died in World War I and symbolizing all unidentified fallen soldiers of Italy.
On the left side of the composition, subtle ghosted crosses appear within a yellow-toned sky, floating among a gradient of blue tones that form a striking atmospheric backdrop.
