Description

La Goulue — Les Soirs — Book Plate XXIV Lithographic Print (1951)

This lithographic reproduction, printed by Mourlot Frères in Paris in February 1951, presents Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s preparatory study associated with La Goulue, one of his most recognized subjects from the Moulin Rouge milieu. Rather than a finished poster design, the image captures the immediacy of Lautrec’s draftsmanship, preserving the spontaneity of his observational line.

The composition reflects the artist’s engagement with Parisian nightlife in the early 1890s, where performers and café scenes became central to his work. Figures are rendered with abbreviated, expressive strokes, suggesting movement and atmosphere rather than fixed detail. This approach aligns with Lautrec’s broader practice of distilling character and gesture into essential visual elements.

Issued as part of the postwar Mourlot reproductions, this 1951 print translates the original sketch into lithographic form while maintaining the tonal softness and fluidity of the drawing. These editions contributed to renewed mid-20th-century interest in Lautrec’s graphic work, particularly his studies and lesser-known compositions.

The print is presented on archival, acid-free linen backing and remains in excellent condition, ready for framing.
