India – TWA Diorama – Rex Werner 1949 Original Vintage Travel Poster
This beautiful original TWA diorama poster promoting India was designed in 1949 by Rex Werner for Trans World Airlines (TWA). The scene presents a richly detailed view of an ornate palace complex surrounded by formal gardens and reflecting pools. In the foreground, a rider sits atop a magnificently decorated elephant adorned with ceremonial textiles and ornaments, evoking the grandeur and pageantry associated with India’s historic royal courts.
Visitors stroll along garden pathways while elegant domes and spires rise above the palace architecture in the background. The composition captures both the architectural splendor and cultural richness that made India one of the most fascinating destinations for international travelers during the early era of global air travel.
The image was created using Werner’s distinctive diorama technique, in which miniature architectural models and landscapes were carefully constructed and then photographed. Through skillful lighting and perspective, these elaborate miniature sets produced remarkably lifelike scenes that became a signature feature of TWA’s advertising during the golden age of aviation.
Rex Werner served as Art Director for Trans World Airlines from 1947 to 1964, later becoming Director of Corporate Design and eventually Vice President of Design. His imaginative diorama posters combined sculpture, photography, and graphic design to create memorable travel images that remain highly collectible today.
Trans World Airlines (TWA) was founded in 1924 as Transcontinental & Western Air, originally connecting New York and Los Angeles before expanding internationally following World War II. The airline established routes across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, helping to introduce travelers to destinations around the world. Under the ownership of Howard Hughes from 1939 to 1961, TWA became one of the most recognized airlines of the twentieth century.
