Description

Edward Penfield created this haunting image for Harper’s Monthly Magazine in 1895—a four-color lithograph that captures the psychological complexity of German nationalism in a single, unforgettable figure. A German soldier stands at attention, rifle in hand, uniformed and helmeted as if ready for duty. Yet Penfield’s genius lies in what he conveys through the soldier’s face and posture: beneath the military bearing lies profound uneasiness, even despair. The rifle is gripped not in confidence but in something closer to resignation. This is not triumphalism; it is ambivalence rendered visible.

The poster announced the July 1895 issue of Harper’s, which began Bigelow’s ambitious serialized history of the Germanic people—described as “the first popular interpretation ever given to the rehabilitation of Germany through the uprising of the German people against the Napoleonic invasion.” The series would eventually be published by Harper and Brothers as a prestigious two-volume set in 1896, making this poster a gateway to one of the era’s most substantial historical projects. The color palette—grey, blue, yellow, and red—creates a restrained, almost somber mood that reinforces the complexity of the subject matter.

About Edward Penfield (1866–1925)

Edward Penfield was one of America’s most influential poster designers and illustrators, instrumental in establishing the American poster school at the turn of the century. His work for Harper’s Monthly Magazine defined the aesthetic of American commercial art in the 1890s—bold compositions, psychological depth, and a mastery of lithographic color that rivaled European masters. Penfield understood that great advertising art could be great art, period. His posters combined commercial necessity with genuine artistic ambition, creating images that worked equally well as magazine covers and gallery pieces. His influence shaped the visual language of American publishing and design for decades.
