Description

A. M. Cassandre, Project for A Newspaper Poster, 1937

An exceptional and rare gravure print from Fortune Magazine’s March 1937 issue, this masterwork by the legendary Art Deco designer A. M. Cassandre exemplifies the sophisticated visual language that defined the movement’s golden age. The composition presents a commanding white-gloved hand cradling the globe—a potent symbol of journalistic reach and editorial authority. The hand itself is composed of newspaper text, creating a brilliant visual metaphor where the medium of news literally becomes the instrument of global influence. Set against a deep blue background scattered with golden accents, the design captures the modernist aesthetic at its finest: bold, geometric, and conceptually sophisticated.

This is an unpublished project design—one of only four poster concepts Cassandre created for Fortune Magazine in 1937. These designs were never mass-produced and exist as rare artifacts of one of the twentieth century’s most celebrated designers working at the height of his creative powers. The hand symbol became iconic in Cassandre’s vocabulary, representing human agency, control, and mastery—here applied to the dissemination of global information during a pivotal moment in world history.
