Original Blood or Bread, an archival linen-backed vintage World War 1 poster that is ready to frame. Very good condition.
This strong food conservation poster was designed by Henry Patrick Raleigh for the US Food Administration in 1917. Changing American eating habits was essential as beef production required grains, which were needed for export to Europe. Other posters stressed the importance of eating fruits & vegetables as a healthy alternative. Here, a different message was presented… others are sacrificing, and you too have to do your duty by eating only what you need and reducing waste.
Saving food, saving lives. This First World War poster was created by the United States Food Administration to advocate for the conservation of food resources for overseas allies. It asks men to do their share for the war effort by adopting the ‘doctrine of the clean plate’ and not let food go to waste.
Raleigh was an exceptionally talented and well-known illustrator and commercial artist doing work for the Sat. Eve. Post and other publications.
