Description

Chemin de fer du Nord Beauvais Vintage French Travel Poster – Manceaux (c.1920s)

This beautiful original Chemin de fer du Nord travel poster for Beauvais was created by the artist Manceaux in the 1920s, promoting the historic northern French city through the celebrated French railway network.

The composition features a lively historical scene set before the magnificent Cathédrale Saint‑Pierre de Beauvais, renowned for its soaring Gothic architecture and extraordinary height. In the foreground, figures in period dress gather near a mounted rider and cannon while townspeople walk through the square, evoking the city’s rich history and medieval heritage.

Above the scene appears the banner “Fêtes de Jeanne Hachette – dernier dimanche de Juin”, referencing the famous annual festival honoring Jeanne Hachette, the heroine who helped defend Beauvais during the Burgundian siege of 1472. The festival remains one of the most celebrated historic traditions of the city.

The poster also highlights the cultural attractions of Beauvais with the text:

La Ville du Moyen Age
Sa Cathédrale
Sa Manufacture de Tapisseries
Son Musée, Ses Vieilles Maisons

Produced for the Chemin de fer du Nord, one of France’s major railway companies before the creation of SNCF, this poster promoted rail travel to historic destinations throughout northern France. Posters of this era combined elegant typography with romantic historical imagery, making them both effective advertisements and enduring works of graphic art.

Printed by Lucien Serre, this piece exemplifies the classic style of early 20th‑century French railway posters, blending travel promotion with cultural storytelling.

This poster has been professionally archival linen‑backed and is in excellent condition, ready for framing and display.
