Calais France Vintage Travel Poster – Chemin de Fer du Nord by Jeanne Poye Maillard
Original vintage travel poster: Calais – Son Port, Sa Plage, designed by Jeanne Poye Maillard for the Chemin de Fer du Nord (French Northern Railway). This striking Art Deco travel poster, created around the late 1920s to early 1930s, promotes the seaside port city of Calais, France as a premier coastal destination.
The composition features a dramatic architectural view with a tall clock tower in the foreground, overlooking the colorful city skyline and harbor of Calais. Seagulls glide across a bright yellow sky while the coastal landscape stretches toward the sea. The bold typography and geometric composition reflect the elegant Art Deco graphic style that defined railway travel advertising during the golden age of European tourism.
This poster was commissioned by the Compagnie du Chemin de Fer du Nord, the railway company that operated the northern French rail network from 1845 until its integration into SNCF in 1938. Railway companies widely used posters like this to attract travelers to coastal resorts and historic cities throughout northern France.
Calais became famous not only as a major port but also as a global center of lace and embroidery production. Beginning in the early 19th century, British entrepreneurs introduced Leavers lace‑making machines, transforming Calais into one of Europe’s most important textile manufacturing centers. The city’s delicate lace became synonymous with luxury and was used by leading French fashion houses.
Jeanne Poye Maillard was a notable French graphic artist recognized for her travel and promotional posters in the early 20th century. Her work combines strong composition, elegant Art Deco design, and vibrant color harmony, making her posters highly collectible examples of classic French travel advertising.
