Description

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec – L’Hareng Saur (Désiré Dihau) – 1935 H. Lefebvre Edition Lithograph

This lithographic reproduction, published in Paris by H. Lefebvre in 1935, presents Toulouse-Lautrec’s L’Hareng Saur, originally designed in the 1890s as a cover for sheet music performed by the singer and bassoonist Désiré Dihau, with lyrics by Jean Richepin.

The composition reflects Lautrec’s early exploration of lithography, combining loose, expressive line with a spontaneous, observational quality. The central figure—likely Dihau himself—is rendered with economical strokes, set within a loosely defined café or performance environment. Typography and image are integrated in the manner of late 19th-century song sheets, emphasizing function alongside artistic character.

While the original impressions were issued as part of a musical publication, later editions such as Lefebvre’s 1935 printing were produced for collectors and helped disseminate Lautrec’s graphic work to a wider audience. These editions retain the essential composition and drawn quality of the original, though they differ from period impressions in printing method and context.

Reference is commonly made to Delteil 139 and Wittrock 134 for the original composition.
