This lithographic reproduction, published in Paris by H. Lefebvre in 1935, presents Toulouse-Lautrec’s L’Hareng Saur, originally designed in the 1890s as a cover for sheet music performed by the singer and bassoonist Désiré Dihau, with lyrics by Jean Richepin.
The composition reflects Lautrec’s early exploration of lithography, combining loose, expressive line with a spontaneous, observational quality. The central figure—likely Dihau himself—is rendered with economical strokes, set within a loosely defined café or performance environment.
