Description
Character Meets Paper Quality
This is clever design thinking: assign a personality to a paper stock by pairing it with a character everyone knows. Dick Tracy—tough, sharp, decisive—becomes the visual embodiment of Frostone paper. The bold lines, the fedora, that commanding presence. It all says: this paper is strong, confident, print-ready.
Part of a Design Legacy
This comes from Charles Anderson’s Swatch Book Poster Series for French Paper Company. The concept was brilliant—instead of dry specs and technical data, why not show what each paper line feels like through a character? It turned a paper promotion into actual design art that people wanted to keep on their walls.
The Design
Bold black and white line work with strategic color—comic book storytelling meets contemporary graphic design. Dick Tracy’s iconic silhouette dominates, surrounded by French Paper’s branding and color swatches. It’s energetic, clean, and it communicates instantly. This is design that works on both a technical level (showing off what the paper can do) and an emotional level (making you feel something).
Why It Matters
This poster captures a moment when designers stopped treating promotional materials as necessary evil and started treating them as art. Anderson proved that marketing materials could be genuinely creative, memorable, and worth collecting.
Original & Unbacked
Authentic serigraph in fine condition. It’s never been linen-backed, which keeps it true to its original form. This is the real piece—created to showcase what Frostone could do.
Perfect For
Graphic designers, Dick Tracy fans, design history collectors, and anyone who appreciates work that bridges comic culture, fine art, and functional design.
