Description
Amtrak “Desert Wind” vintage travel poster (Los Angeles–Las Vegas–Ogden) is a rare original Amtrak advertisement poster for the airline-analog era of long-distance rail travel. This vintage piece features vibrant, classic promotional artwork highlighting the passenger train route connecting Los Angeles, CA, Las Vegas, NV, and Ogden, UT, before continuing onward via the California Zephyr.
The Desert Wind was a long-distance Amtrak passenger train that operated from October 28, 1979, to May 10, 1997. It provided scheduled service that connected major Western destinations and delivered an iconic travel experience for rail enthusiasts and collectors. Since its discontinuation in 1997, Las Vegas has not had scheduled Amtrak service.
Before Amtrak: Regular passenger rail service to Las Vegas ended in May 1971 when Amtrak chose not to include the Union Pacific Railroad route “City of Los Angeles” in its network. A few short-lived attempts to restore service followed in the 1970s, including the “Las Vegas Limited” in 1976.
Later operations: The route was eventually integrated into the California Zephyr and Pioneer, with all three operating as a single train between Chicago and Salt Lake City (or Denver at one point). In Salt Lake City, the train split—California Zephyr toward Oakland/San Francisco, Pioneer toward Seattle, and the Desert Wind south to Los Angeles.
Condition: this original travel poster is Grade A-, ready to frame, with excellent colors and no tears or damage. Suitable for collectors of vintage railroad ephemera and American travel advertising, this is a standout piece of rail history.
